These are natural herding dogs; they were bred specially for this task. Though when the breeders realized that the dog is very intelligent and pocesses many other abilities they were also used as guard dogs, police dogs and even as drug searching dogs. Your GSD will try to "herd" you and your family and it likes to be in a "pack." Some of the dogs are bound to be aggressive to other dogs of the same gender and can also be territorial. Often they will follow ahead; walking in front of you and looking back to make sure you're going where you should.
