Keep in mind that distinguished breeders have long waiting lists for upcoming litters and do not have to advertise their pups. Following ads in papers you can only buy a pet quality animal of a doubtful background. Novice owners are not recommended to own a pet of this breed, because if not trained properly it may become difficult to control.

The physical characteristics of the breed are the following: average size of males is 22-26 inches at the withers, females are about 22-24 inches. Males weigh 75-95 pounds whereas females weigh 75-95 pounds. The breed is also known under other names: Alsatian and Deutscher Schaferhund. Because of their intelligence, responsiveness and ability to focus, they are easy to train. These animals are adaptable to apartment, suburban, and country living, as long as they are exercised and properly socialized when young.
