German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - General Breed Description

German Shepherds have a strong, agile, deep and harmoniously built body. It is not slim, and it has a well developed muscular system. The dog is naturally noble and statuesque on appearance, to which smooth contours of the body add to the appearance substantially. Sex characteristics are fairly observable, and there are always defined feminine and muscular traits.

German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - Size and proportion

German Shepherd Dogs' length exceeds the height at the withers. Males are 24-26 inches tall at the withers, and females range 22 to 24 inches. The length is actually the distance between the breastbone and the edge of the croup. The most preferable length-to-height proportion is 10 to 8.5 inches.

German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - Head

The head is properly cut, smooth and strong. It should not be course and must proportionately fit to the rest of the body. Eyes are almond shaped, not too prominent and medium sized. Darker colors are more desirable. Ears should always be erect and never cropped or hanging (disqualifying fault). When excited, ears stand upright, parallel to each other, and preferably perpendicular to the ground. The muzzle is long, wedge shaped and the nose is black. Lips are firm and not hanging. German Shepherds have strong jaws, the lower one having 22 teeth and the upper - 20. Front teeth close in a scissors bite, the upper incisors covering the outer part of the lower ones. Dentition must be complete.

German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - Body

The neck of a German Shepherd is long and muscular. When the animal is alert or attentive, the neck is held high. In natural state, the head is directed forward, almost the same level as the withers. The back is straight and not very long. Chest is deep and roomy. A profile view reveals the breastbone going farther ahead than shoulders. Stomach is firm and moderately tucks up.The densely coated tail curves slightly. The tip should go as far down as to reach the hock joint. In an excited state, the tail carries relatively high, but not bent over. The shoulder blades are oblique and the upper arm joins to the shoulder blade at an almost right angle. Forequarters and hindquarters are well muscled. Both hind- and forelegs are tightly set, strong and harmonically parallel. Any dewclaws on the hind legs must be removed. Those on the forelegs may be left.

German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - Coat

German Shepherd dogs have a double coat. The outer coat is straight and dense. It should cling firmly and smoothly to the body. The head and the legs are covered with short hair. The rear sides of the legs have longer hair. The hair on the neck and the rest of the body is longer. German Shepherds vary in color. They are mostly black with tan, gray or yellowish markings. The markings can occupy a considerable part of the entire body.

German Shepherds Rescues Breeders - Trot

German Shepherd dogs are trotters. They have a very light and effortless gait. They appear to cover more yards than they make steps. The back does not seem to move at all, and is always kept even and parallel to the ground. Coordinated movement of the front- and the hind legs makes German Shepherds excellent runners.
