Unlike breeder clubs, rescue clubs do not intend their dogs for breeding, because if a dog is abandoned it is frequently due to breed faults or health problems. All rescued dogs are neutered and then handed over to dog lovers as pets. Rescue clubs do their best to boost the good qualities that a dog already has and to conduct obedience, training courses.

Rescue clubs consist of volunteers and are non-profit organizations. The only income they have comes from adoption fees and payments for inoculation and veterinary help. Just as breeder clubs do, rescue clubs screen potential buyers for breed suitability and proper attitude. Rescue specialists request buyers to sign contracts, which oblige them to return the dog to the rescue club if the owner decides they are unable to keep it.

German shepherd dogs are widely spread; therefore, as a rule, rescue houses are full to capacity. Most people abandon their dogs for lack of knowledge on how to properly care or train them. Frequently owners part with their dogs when the dogs become adult. Because of such overpopulation, most German Shepherd rescue clubs deal exclusively with German Shepherds.
