The English kennel club gave the breed a separate register in 1919. There were only about 54 animals included in the register. But by the year 1926 the number of the dogs increased and the popularity of the breed rose too. At the end of the World War II it was thought that the breed would not flourish. Its name was therefore changed to the Alsatian Wolf Dog after the German-French border area of Alsace-Lorraine.

Some people believe that these dogs are aggressive and dangerous, but it’s far from the truth. Much depends on the breeder and the owner. Buying from reputable breeders is the only way to avoid most behavior problems in a dog. Responsible breeders guarantee that their dogs are free from most typical disorders the breed is susceptible to. Only the best dogs should be used in breeding programs. It ensures good health and stable temperament without traces of aggression in the breed. Unfortunately, many backyard breeders who care mostly for profit produce mediocre dogs. Such dogs may also be good pets, but they lead to degeneration of the breed. The carolina german north shepherd club has many photos of any available puppy of club members.
